Eddie Howe insists Newcastle are not in the financial position to offer Alexander Isak a new deal. Warning the player that rewards come only from performances on the football pitch.
The Daily Mail revealed on Thursday that talks over a new contract had not taken place. After initial discussions at the end of last season. And that sent Arsenal into a tailspin.UFABET
The club, led by new sporting director Paul Mitchell, believe Isak has enough time to live up to his current deal. Which expires in 2028, and he is already one of their highest-paid players. There are concerns over the pace of the project on Tyneside, with Isak’s ambitions to play in the Champions League.
Howe has spoken about the matter and admitted that there are no current contract negotiations.
“It’s a bit of a complicated situation.” he replied when asked about the comparison to Anthony Gordon, who signed a new contract this week.
“I think Alex has a long-term contract and we have to be very careful with our spending. Because of financial regulations. It’s not a clear-cut situation.” he said.
“Every decision we make as a club has consequences. For contract extensions, there are financial regulations and we have to make sure. We don’t put ourselves in a situation where we can’t act freely in the transfer market because of what we do with individual player contracts.”
“Of course we love Alex and want him to stay at Newcastle for many years and score goals for us. But I don’t see any short-term problems with his contract. At the moment Alex has to focus on his football. Whether he says ‘I’m fine, I’ve got a year left on my contract. I’m happy at the club and I want to play my best football’, that’s the ideal world.”
“But of course nothing in football is certain. So I’m sure there will be ongoing discussions between Alex and his agent and the club. Alex can only help his situation by playing well.”
